Vishay Introduces High Force Density, High Resolution Small Touch Feedback Actuators for Touchscreens, Simulators and Joysticks

MALVERN, Pennsylvania — November 12, 2021 — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) today announced the launch of IHPT, a new customizable haptic feedback actuator for commercial touchscreens, joysticks and touch switch panels -1411AF-AB0. Vishay’s custom electromagnetic IHPT-1411AF-AB0 is a small two-piece construction with mounting holes for easy installation and direct access, high shock pulse and vibration capability, and provides clarity in noisy environments or anywhere a mechanical response of action is required haptic feedback. This haptic feedback actuator operates up to +105 °C and is ideal for harsh environments.

The IHPT-1411AF-AB0 is an electromagnetic device that converts electrical energy into a mechanical pulse or vibration signal for touch operation, which varies with power and input voltage duty cycle. The touch coil assembly generates a magnetic field under the excitation of a DC voltage pulse, and adsorbs the installed moving magnetic core. A customer-supplied spring assembly returns the core after power is removed.

The device has an adjustable fast response time of less than 5 ms, can produce a variety of high-resolution (HD) haptic effects, and is rated to operate at 12 V up to 16 V. Typical end products include LCD displays used in industrial appliances, building and factory automation control systems, as well as Electronic point-of-sale (POS), medical monitoring, diagnostic and surgical equipment, handheld radios, gaming or analog controllers, barcode scanners. Applications also include rotary or joystick control devices, as well as touch switch and push button control panels.

The simple structure of the IHPT-1411AF-AB0 skeleton and core components allows designers to adjust the spring and housing layout, and the housing is integrated with the Display firmware, eliminating the need for additional housings, making it cost-effective, low-component height, and cost-effective compared to competing technologies Excellent performance in high force density, including linear resonance, linear broadband, eccentric rotating mass and piezoelectric actuators. In addition, Vishay offers hassle-free mounting IHPT devices including return springs and mounting holes for quick installation in customer applications.

The recently released device can drive a 0.5 kg load to 6 g acceleration at 12 V, 5 ms pulses; competing technologies can only drive a 0.1 kg to 0.2 kg load to this level. The inductance of the driving coil is 1.8 mH, the typical DC resistance (DCR) is 0.95 W, and the insulation withstand voltage between the coil and the magnetic core is 150 VDC. The new actuators are RoHS and Vishay Green compliant, halogen-free, and feature 100 % solder dip standard lead terminations. Vishay can customize the IHPT-1411AF-AB0 mounting orientation, termination type and performance to any design specification.

Samples and production quantities of the new haptic feedback actuators are available now, with lead times of 12 weeks.
